Meet Dr. Abreu
Dr. Orlando Abreu was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela where he received his Dental degree from the Universidad Santa Maria, School of Dentistry in 2004. After completing his undergraduate dental education and practicing in Venezuela as a General Dentist, he moved with his wife to Puerto Rico to pursue a two-year General Practice Residency in Dentistry (GPR) in 2010, and a Postdoctoral Master of Sciences in Clinical and Translation Research in 2012, both at the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
After dental school, he practiced as a General Dentist in Virginia’s New River Valley before moving to Illinois with his family to complete his post-doctoral specialty training in Periodontics, and a Master of Science in Oral Sciences at the University of Illinois Chicago, College of Dentistry in 2023. During his last year of residency at UIC, he served as the Chief Resident, and also received the Dr. Charles F. Di Franco Scholarship Award for his compassionate and humanitarian service with his patients. One year after graduation, Dr. Abreu became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. Board certification in periodontics and dental implant surgery represents a personal and professional commitment to the standards of the profession and to continued growth through ongoing education. Diplomates are required to maintain certification through continuing education and periodic testing, which demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning and requires Diplomates to continually update their knowledge and skills.
Dr. Abreu previously served as a test developer for the Integrated National Board Dental Examination with the Joint Commission of the American Dental Association. He also served as examiner for the CITA-ADEX dental competencies examination. Currently, Dr. Abreu is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Periodontics at the University of Illinois Chicago, College of Dentistry.
Memberships in professional organizations include the American Academy of Periodontology, American Board of Periodontology, Academy of Osseointegration, American Dental Association, Midwest Society of Periodontology, Illinois State Dental Society, Chicago Dental Society, and Hispanic Dental Association.
Dr. Abreu is a fan of the “back-to-back” World Series Champions Toronto Blue Jays, Virginia Tech Hokies and Leones del Caracas baseball club at his hometown in Venezuela. Dr. Abreu and his wife have three beautiful children. In their free time, they enjoy going to the beach, traveling, and discovering new culinary options and family activities in the Chicagoland area.
